Attracting leading academics and researchers, journalists and creative industry professionals, the conference presented a series of panels, talks, and 5-minute presentations from artists and business developers, focusing on AI, machine-learning and creative-led data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/agenda?be19day01\">first day<\/a> of the conference kicked off with introductory talks by <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/chris-speed\/\">Prof Chris Speed<\/a> (University of Edinburgh), keynote <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/carly-kind\/\">Carly Kind<\/a> (The Ada Lovelace Institute) and science and tech writer and conference host <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/gemma-milne\/\">Gemma Milne<\/a>. In his talk, <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/parry-malm\/\">Parry Malm<\/a> (Phrasee) explained AI-aided copywriting and highlighted the importance of language for brands\u2019 success. CTO of ScriptBook, <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/michiel-ruelens\/\">Michiel Ruelens<\/a> discussed AI script analysis systems and the creation of DeepStory. Chaired by <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/adam-ganz\/\">Adam Ganz<\/a> (StoryFutures), the panel included <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/abigail-williams\/\">Prof Abigail Williams<\/a> (University of Oxford), <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/guy-gadney\/\">Guy Gadney<\/a> (Charisma.AI) and <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/ian-hambleton\/\">Ian Hambleton<\/a> (Maze Theory). Their panel explored the ways in which AI could potentially change the rules and experience of storytelling, both for narrators and audience. The first panel\u2019s discussions on AI and its relationship to human creativity and the meaning of words carried through to <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/pip-thornton\/\">Pip Thornton<\/a>\u2019s presentation. An artist and researcher, Thornton questioned the difference between the value and the price of words in an increasingly digital world. Artist <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/jake-elwes\/\">Jake Elwes<\/a> talked about the agency of the artist as opposed to AI\u2019s ability to mimic visual tropes, and reflected on what would it mean to actually collaborate with AI in visual art production. Elwes discussed his work \u2018Cusp\u2019, which showcases the ways a photographic dataset learns from images of marsh birds and then generates images of creatures that fluctuates between the original images, and his latest work Zizi, a drag persona generated by AI datasets. The <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/agenda?be19day02#values\">first panel<\/a>, chaired by Chanuki Seresinhe, featured <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/sarah-coward\/\">Sarah Coward<\/a> (The Forever Project) and <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/brendan-miles\/\">Brendan Miles<\/a> (The List), who discussed the role of AI in the preservation and dissemination of knowledge and culture, as well as the most significant problems that platforms of recommendation and discovery posed. Other conversation topics included curatorial practices, fed by user data, data collection, and data-driven experiences. The <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/agenda?be19day02#dark\">second panel<\/a> brought together keynote <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/karen-palmer\/\">Karen Palmer<\/a> (Storyteller from the Future and Artist), <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/angus-bancroft\/\">Angus Bancroft<\/a> (University of Edinburgh) and <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/michael-rovatsos\/\">Prof Michael Rovatsos<\/a> (University of Edinburgh). Chaired by <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/nicola-osborne\/\">Nicola Osbourne<\/a> (University of Edinburgh), the panel reflected on the ethical and political challenges of data-driven economy, possibilities of AI implementation in daily life, and the realities of algorithmic bias. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery aligncenter columns-3 is-cropped\"><ul First of these was <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/lukas-dirzys\/\">Lukas Dirzys<\/a> (co-founder and CTO at Creative AI) whose talk introduced the audience to ways to revolutionise the systems that enable users to discover content and develop creative ideas. <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/vishal-kumar\/\">Vishal Kumar<\/a> (Photogram.ai) introduced the company\u2019s AI-accelerated software and hardware tools for modern photography. <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/ed-stack\/\">Ed Stack<\/a> (Delic.Network) talked about the role of AI tools in the music industry and profit-for-artists platforms. <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/rony-seamons\/\">Rony Seamons<\/a> (AMPLYFI) discussed the future of business intelligence and the ways the company\u2019s AI-powered tools can help business development by exposing and harvesting the information sources available on the Internet. <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/laura-smith\/\">Laura Smith<\/a> (CEO and co-founder of Slanted Theory) introduced new ways of data visualisation through the incorporation of VR\/AR\/MR tools, disrupting traditional data representation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ED5D1661-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ED5D1661-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ED5D1661-980x653.jpg 980w, https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ED5D1661-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference also included a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/agenda?be19day03\">fringe events<\/a> that captured visitors\u2019 attention in-between the conference proceedings. Attracting leading academics and researchers, journalists and creative industry professionals, the conference presented a series of panels, talks, and 5-minute presentations from artists and business developers, focusing on AI, machine-learning and creative-led data. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/agenda?be19day01\">first day<\/a> of the conference kicked off with introductory talks by <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/chris-speed\/\">Prof Chris Speed<\/a> (University of Edinburgh), keynote <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/carly-kind\/\">Carly Kind<\/a> (The Ada Lovelace Institute) and science and tech writer and conference host <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/gemma-milne\/\">Gemma Milne<\/a>. In his talk, <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/parry-malm\/\">Parry Malm<\/a> (Phrasee) explained AI-aided copywriting and highlighted the importance of language for brands\u2019 success. CTO of ScriptBook, <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/michiel-ruelens\/\">Michiel Ruelens<\/a> discussed AI script analysis systems and the creation of DeepStory. This first part of the core conference programme concluded with <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/chanuki-illushka-seresinhe\/\">Chanuki Seresinhe<\/a>\u2019s presentation of her work at the Alan Turing Institute and the intentions behind the founding of Popsa, a company that applies AI to curate visual content and produce exquisite keepsakes.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image {\"id\":2402,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"http:\/\/beyondconference.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/008_Reeps_One_MM514571-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Harry Yeff \/ Reeps 100 at Beyond 2019\" class=\"wp-image-2402\"\/><figcaption>Harry Yeff \/ Reeps 100 at Beyond 2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Ruelens and Seresinhe also joined <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/prof-dave-bull\/\">Prof Dave Bull<\/a> (University of Bristol) the first panel of the conference. Chaired by <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/adam-ganz\/\">Adam Ganz<\/a> (StoryFutures), the panel included <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/abigail-williams\/\">Prof Abigail Williams<\/a> (University of Oxford), <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/guy-gadney\/\">Guy Gadney<\/a> (Charisma.AI) and <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/ian-hambleton\/\">Ian Hambleton<\/a> (Maze Theory). Their panel explored the ways in which AI could potentially change the rules and experience of storytelling, both for narrators and audience. The first panel\u2019s discussions on AI and its relationship to human creativity and the meaning of words carried through to <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/pip-thornton\/\">Pip Thornton<\/a>\u2019s presentation. An artist and researcher, Thornton questioned the difference between the value and the price of words in an increasingly digital world. Artist <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/jake-elwes\/\">Jake Elwes<\/a> talked about the agency of the artist as opposed to AI\u2019s ability to mimic visual tropes, and reflected on what would it mean to actually collaborate with AI in visual art production. Elwes discussed his work \u2018Cusp\u2019, which showcases the ways a photographic dataset learns from images of marsh birds and then generates images of creatures that fluctuates between the original images, and his latest work Zizi, a drag persona generated by AI datasets. The final speaker, <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/aste-amundsen\/\">\u00c5ste Amundsen<\/a> (Computer Aided Theatre) continued the conference\u2019s discussion of the uses of AI tools in performative modes of storytelling. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image {\"id\":2454,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"http:\/\/beyondconference.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/059_Karen_Palmer_MM515004-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Karen Palmer Beyond 2019\" class=\"wp-image-2454\"\/><figcaption>Keynote Karen Palmer at Beyond 2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Beyond\u2019s second day featured two main panels. The <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/agenda?be19day02#values\">first panel<\/a>, chaired by Chanuki Seresinhe, featured <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/sarah-coward\/\">Sarah Coward<\/a> (The Forever Project) and <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/brendan-miles\/\">Brendan Miles<\/a> (The List), who discussed the role of AI in the preservation and dissemination of knowledge and culture, as well as the most significant problems that platforms of recommendation and discovery posed. Other conversation topics included curatorial practices, fed by user data, data collection, and data-driven experiences. The <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/agenda?be19day02#dark\">second panel<\/a> brought together keynote <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/karen-palmer\/\">Karen Palmer<\/a> (Storyteller from the Future and Artist), <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/angus-bancroft\/\">Angus Bancroft<\/a> (University of Edinburgh) and <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/michael-rovatsos\/\">Prof Michael Rovatsos<\/a> (University of Edinburgh). First of these was <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/lukas-dirzys\/\">Lukas Dirzys<\/a> (co-founder and CTO at Creative AI) whose talk introduced the audience to ways to revolutionise the systems that enable users to discover content and develop creative ideas. <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/vishal-kumar\/\">Vishal Kumar<\/a> (Photogram.ai) introduced the company\u2019s AI-accelerated software and hardware tools for modern photography. <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/ed-stack\/\">Ed Stack<\/a> (Delic.Network) talked about the role of AI tools in the music industry and profit-for-artists platforms. <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/rony-seamons\/\">Rony Seamons<\/a> (AMPLYFI) discussed the future of business intelligence and the ways the company\u2019s AI-powered tools can help business development by exposing and harvesting the information sources available on the Internet. <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/speakers\/laura-smith\/\">Laura Smith<\/a> (CEO and co-founder of Slanted Theory) introduced new ways of data visualisation through the incorporation of VR\/AR\/MR tools, disrupting traditional data representation. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image {\"id\":2483,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"http:\/\/beyondconference.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ED5D1661-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2483\"\/><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The conference also included a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondconference.org\/agenda?be19day03\">fringe events<\/a> that captured visitors\u2019 attention in-between the conference proceedings.
