Does this innovative kind of immersive storytelling feel \u2018real\u2019 and engaging to National Gallery (London, UK) visitors? Is their user experience different when using Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR)? <\/p>\n<p>This study compared user experiences of one VR and two AR versions of an immersive gallery experience \u2018Virtual Veronese\u2019, measuring multiple aspects of user experience, including enjoyment, presence, cognitive, emotional and behavioural engagement, using a between-subjects design, at the National Gallery in London, UK. <\/p>\n<p>Analysis of the self-reported survey data (N=368) showed the following: <br>\n&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Enjoyment was high on all devices, with the Oculus Quest (VR) receiving higher mean scores than both AR devices, Magic Leap and Mira Prism. <br>\n&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In relation to presence, the elements \u2018spatial presence\u2019, \u2018involvement\u2019, and \u2018sense of being there\u2019 received a higher mean score on the Oculus Quest than on both AR devices, and on realism the Oculus Quest scored significantly higher than the Magic Leap. <br>\n&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Cognitive engagement was similar between the three devices, with only one individual item, \u2018I knew what to do\u2019, being rated higher for Quest than Mira Prism. <br>\n&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Emotional engagement was similar between the devices. <br>\n&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Behavioural engagement was high on all devices, with only \u2018I would like to see more experiences like this\u2019 being higher for Oculus Quest than Mira Prism. <br>\n&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Negative effects including nausea were rarely reported. <\/p>\n<p>Differences in user experiences were likely partly driven by differences in technical immersion levels between the devices. <\/p>\n<p>The study suggests that both VR and AR can be effective immersive storytelling tools in cultural places.<\/p><\/p><\/div><div class=\"col1-3\"><div><img src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/cepUploads\/Isabelle-Verhulst.jpg\" width=\"100%\"><\/div><p style=\"margin-block-end: 0;padding-bottom:0.5rem;\">Isabelle Velhurst<\/p><div style=\"background-image:url(\/wp-content\/uploads\/cep\/mail.png)\" class=\"icon\" onclick=\"window.open('mailto:isabelle.verhulst@rhul.ac.uk?subject=Audience of the Future 2021')\"><\/div><hr class=\"cep-left-to-right\" style=\"margin: 1rem 0;\"><p style=\"margin-block-end: 0;padding-bottom: 0.5rem;\">Royal Holloway University of London<\/p><h4 style=\"position:relative;margin-top: 1.5rem;padding: 0;\" onclick=\"var tmpNext=this.nextElementSibling;var tmpToggle=this.querySelector('.toggleShowHide');if(tmpNext.classList.contains('show')){tmpNext.classList.remove('show');tmpToggle.innerHTML='+';}else{tmpNext.classList.add('show');tmpToggle.innerHTML='\u2212';}\">Biography<div class=\"toggleShowHide red\">\u2212<\/div><\/h4><div class=\"toggleContent show\"><p>Isabelle Verhulst (MBA, MSci) is an Audience Insight Researcher at StoryFutures (Academy), focusing on immersive audiences\u2019 attitudes and behaviours.
